Stagflation- The economic quality of having a stagnant economy while still having inflation.
OPEC- The Alliance of Oil Producing companies, mostly from the Middle East.
Sunbelt- The area in the Southern US near the Gulf of Mexico, from Texas and Oklahoma to Tennessee and South Carolina.
Snowbelt/Rustbelt- The name given to the North, due to cold winters and massive iron production.
Gerald Ford- The only President never to be elected to his office or the VP office. He came in to finish Nixon’s term.
WIN- Whip Inflation Now, Ford’s movement to help curb inflation.
Jimmy Carter- The Winner of the Election of 1976. He is the only President from Georgia.

Inflation- The process of a currency devaluing itself in relation to products or other currencies.
Affirmative Action- A method of redressing discrimination that persisted in spite of Civil Rights laws.
Three Mile Island- The most significant American nuclear accident in history.
Love Canal- A neighborhood built in NY state over 21,000 tons of chemical waste. There were many birth defects and other side effects of the pollution.
Silent Spring- The book stating that uncontrolled uses of pesticides killed humans and animals, and which got DDT banned.
EPA- The Environmental Protection Agency. It was given the task of restoring land which had been damaged by humans, as well as safeguarding the American environment.
Proposition 13- A proposition lowering the property taxes in California by around 57%.
New Right- A political movement of the “Moral Majority” of Conservative Christians. They supported Falwell.
Jerry Falwell- The New Right candidate in the Election of 1980.
Equal Rights Amendment- A proposed Amendment to the Constitution which would guarantee equal rights to all US citizens regardless of sex.
Roe v. Wade- A case deciding that states’ outlawing of abortion was an invasion of privacy.

SALT II- A series of talks and agreements moving towards peace between America and the USSR.
Camp David Accords- A group of agreements between Israel and Egypt, in which each agreed to be peaceful with the other.
Carter Doctrine- President JC’s doctrine stating that the US would use military force if necessary to protect its interests in the Persian Gulf.
Presidential Directive 59- A statement of how the US’s weapons would be used in the event of a nuclear war.
Détente- The disarming and befriending between America and the USSR.
Iran Hostage Crisis- An incident in 1979 where anti-US Muslims took control of the US embassy in Iran and took all of its workers hostage, holding them until Carter’s presidency had ended.
Ayatollah Khomeini- The religious leader who also took control of Iran’s government, calling the US the “Great Satan”.
“Malaise Speech”- A JC speech about how he realized that there was an energy crisis and that we needed to develop an alternative energy source.
Ronald Reagan- The Republican president who won the Elections of 1980 and 1984.
Election 1980- Election won by Ronald Reagan.
