Levittown- A neighborhood which was built for the sole purpose of housing a larger population than the country was used to.
Federal Highway Act- An act calling for the creation of our interstate highway system. It provided tons of jobs and money to workers.
National Defense Education Act- Act that provided federal aid to all forms of education in America.
Suburban Domesticity-
Betty Friedan- A women’s activist who published The Feminine Mystique.
The Feminine Mystique- A women’s activist book published by Betty Friedan in 1963. It commented on the boredom of the suburban housewife.
Landrum-Griffin Act- An act stating that former Communists and convicts are not allowed to hold an office in a union for 5 years.
The Lonely Crowd- A book published by David Riesman is 1950. It was an analysis of society’s three types of people- the tradition-directed, the inner-directed, and the other-directed.
Organization Man- A book published by William Whyte, and which was about how the ultimate need of people is simply to belong.
White Collar- A study of White-collar workers by C. Wright Mills that showed great alienation of the workers due to their perfect appearances to customers.
The Power Elite- A book talking about the power of influential leaders in society, and about how the common man was virtually powerless. It was written by C. Wright Mills.
Jonas Salk- The developer of the first polio vaccine.
“Teenager”- A child in the years between 13 and 19. They tended to be rebellious, just as they are today.
“Rock ‘n’ Roll”- Music which evolved from jazz. It usually involved one or two guitars, a bass guitar, a drumset, and possibly a piano or another solo instrument.
Seduction of the Innocent- A book claiming that comic books contributed to juvenile delinquency.
The Beats-
Jack Kerouac- A Beat Generation writer who published On the Road.
On the Road- A book published by Kerouac about a journey he took around the country.
Allen Ginsberg- The American poet who wrote Howl.
John Foster Dulles- The Secretary of State under Eisenhower who was very anti-Communist and who advocated helping the French in their war in Vietnam.
Nikita Khrushchev- The Soviet leader who took over after Stalin.
U-2 Incident- An incident in which a U-2 missile was shot down over Russia in 1960.
Sputnik- The first manmade satellite to be launched into the Earth’s orbit.
ICBMs- Intercontinental Ballistic Missiles, which could be launched from America all the way to the Soviet Union.
NASA- The National Aeronautics and Space Administration.
Shah of Iran- The man put in charge after the CIA backed a coup in Iran in 1953
Suez Crisis of 1956- A crisis which arose after Egyptian President Nasser wanted to build the Aswan High Dam, and ended up nationalizing the Suez Canal. The UK, France, and Israel all attacked Egypt for this, and UN forces were sent to keep the peace.
Domino Theory- A theory of foreign policies which stated that if one of the countries in Southeast Asia fell to Communism, the rest would follow suit.
Geneva Accord- An agreement reached at a multinational conference which halved Vietnam at the 17th Parallel, and which granted independence from France to Indochina.
Ho Chi Minh- The leader and dictator of North Vietnam after the Geneva Accord.
SEATO- The SouthEast Asia Treaty Organization.
Ngo Dinh Diem- The leader of South Vietnam after the Geneva Accord.
Military-Industrial Complex- A group of people who benefit from selling arms to the government.
JFK- The President who succeeded Eisenhower in office. He won the Election of 1960. He was Catholic.
Election of 1960- Election between JFK and Richard Nixon, which was won by JFK.
New Frontier- JFK’s gimmick to describe his goals and policies. He claimed that Americans had to rise to new challenges.
Peace Corps- A group of Young Americans who went to work in 3rd World Countries.
Revenue Act of 1962-
Presidential Commission on the Status of Women- A commission raised in the 60s to advise the President on women’s status in America.
Green Berets- Special Army officers who were increased in number as a part of McNamara’s Flexible Response Plan.
“The Best and the Brightest”- An account of the origins of the Vietnam War by David Halberstam.
Alliance for Progress- An alliance by JFK trying to get economic cooperation between North and South America.
Fidel Castro- The Cuban dictator.
Bay of Pigs- The invasion of Cuba by 1200 Cuban exiles, who were not supported by American troops and were therefore put down and jailed.
Cuban Missile Crisis- A crisis resulting from the Soviets placing nuclear missiles in Cuba.
Limited Nuclear Test-Ban Treaty-
Lyndon B. Johnson- The President who succeeded JFK in office after JFK was shot. He was a real redneck.
